Sustainability
We pride ourselves on sourcing and supporting local growers when this is possible and when their produce is in season. As we purchase directly from the grower, we pass on the saving to our customers.

Schools
Schools have also been set new government standards which restrict foods high in fat, sugar and salt. It is a requirement that more fresh fruit and vegetables be available at dinner-time along with more protein-packed meat and fish, bread and water. The Government recommends an intake of at least five portions of fruit or vegetables per person per day to help improve nutrition and reduce the risk of acquiring serious illness such as cancer and heart disease. With this is mind it has launched the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme in which all four to six-year-old children in LEA maintained infant, primary and special schools are entitled to a piece of fruit or vegetable every school day. A.G. Axton & Sons (Wholesale Limited) now delivers to a wide network of schools and education centres in the South. Our team
An exceptional team that are fully trained in the customer’s requirement. They are very conversant in advising on seasonal product choice, delivery times, pack sizes, locally sourced items, ordering quantities for menus and availability of non stocked products. We aim to support any new customers with frequent visits for the first couple of deliveries to ensure that our team is delivering the expected level of quality and service.

Distribution
The vehicle fleet consists of a purpose built, multi drop refrigerated vehicles of varying weights to suit the customer requirements. From 2 ton though to 18 ton, 1 of 18ton / 5 of 7.5 ton / 3 of 4.5 to / 26 of 3.5 to and 1 of 2 ton, however the majority of the Delivery’s will be in Volkswagen diesel vans with high Co2 controls but low in emission and catalytic converters. The temperature of the vans are constantly monitored and the temperature recorded twice a day as per the general rules concerning the carriage of chilled foodstuffs, contained in EU Regulation 852/2004 and supplemented by the Food Hygiene Regulations. The vehicle fridges are calibrated annually by Direct Diesel Refrigerator Ltd.

Where possible we reduce our food miles by back hauling produce on our transport when passing through various growers in our distribution area of Hampshire, Dorset, Sussex, Surrey and Wiltshire.

Journey times and distances are kept to a minimum by careful route planning and the vehicle fleet is constantly tracked by satellite navigation to minimise fuel costs thus reducing food miles and used as a management tool to review delivery.Vehicles are regularly maintained and subject to daily safety and hygiene checks.

Environmental
Journey times and distances are kept to a minimum by careful route planning and the vehicle fleet is constantly tracked by satellite navigation to minimise fuel costs. Where possible we reduce our food miles by back hauling produce on our transport when passing through various growers in our distribution area of Hampshire, Dorset, Sussex, Surrey and Wiltshire.

We operate reusable and collapsible tray policy for the majority of our produce and distribution network and also require our nominated suppliers to use. When growers are cutting/picking certain items of produce they can be cut in to large palletised containers greatly reducing packaging and labour for the grower.

A.G. Axton & Sons (Wholesale Limited) has been actively reducing waste levels by using all recyclable packaging that can be reused or recycled. These containers are re-used for orders or recycled by baling. The recycled cardboard and plastic is then transferred to nominated waste contractor, in conjunction with a Waste Service Compliance Company the general waste stream is vastly reduced. We where having a collection from our land fill contractor on a twice weekly schedule. This has reduced our impact buy 75%.

We fully comply with the Packaging Waste Regulations and are a member of an approved recycling scheme (Valpak membership No. R M 03359). Waste minimisation is promoted by composting the vegetable waste from our preparation area and the use of returnable containers for delivering produce. All recoverable cardboard and plastic is baled and sold to a recycling company. We offer a collection service for re-usable cardboard crates and larger customers return flattened cardboard for baling.
