Schools have also been set new government standards which restrict foods high in fat, sugar and salt. It is a requirement that more fresh fruit and vegetables be available at dinner-time along with more protein-packed meat and fish, bread and water. The Government recommends an intake of at least five portions of fruit or vegetables per person per day to help improve nutrition and reduce the risk of acquiring serious illness such as cancer and heart disease. With this is mind it has launched the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme in which all four to six-year-old children in LEA maintained infant, primary and special schools are entitled to a piece of fruit or vegetable every school day.
